With extensive experience in performing and recording choral music, Robert is active as a freelance consort and choral singer. As a member of Borealis he is taking part in a project to record the choral works of Hans Gal, of which the first volume was released in July 2020 and featured on BBC Radio 3's Record Review. While a member of the Ebor Singers, he performed solos in many of their concerts, sang live on Radio 3's Early Music Show, and took part in two highly acclaimed CD recordings.
Since becoming a Deputy Songman at York Minster in 2013, Robert has sung over 200 public services with the Minster Choir. Previously as a member of Lichfield Cathedral Choir, Robert was employed to sing for daily services, radio and TV broadcasts, and a concert tour in New York. Other choirs he has sung with include the Choir of Christ's College, Cambridge, Armonico Consort, Ecclesia, Ex Cathedra and the Rodolfus Choir.
A keen recitalist, Robert performs a wide repertoire of English, German and French song. Programmes have included Finzi's Earth and Air and Rain and Let Us Garlands Bring, Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, Schumann's Dichterliebe and Liederkreis Op.39, Ravel's Don Quichotte a Dulcinee and solo songs by Dowland, Purcell, Schubert, Debussy and Gurney.
Concert performances have included Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs in New York as soloist with Lichfield Cathedral Choir; the baritone solos in Brahms German Requiem, Handel's Messiah and Stainer's Crucifixion; and the role of Jesus in Bach's St John Passion.
Robert holds the LRSM Music Performance Diploma in Singing with Distinction. His singing teachers have included Luise Horrocks, David Lowe, Julian Pike and Alex Ashworth.
