1. What is bandwidth? What do you think affects the differences in bandwidth globally as well as in different locations in the U.S.?
Bandwidth is the maximum rate of data transfer in a certain amount of time. Factors that could affect the differences in global bandwidth are different types of cables (copper vs. fiber optic), as well as the demand for a fast connection, which is higher in more developed countries like the United States.
2. What is latency? How does it differ from bandwidth? Why is it a useful measure?
Latency is the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction for its transfer. It is different from bandwidth because it does not measure the actual time it takes to transfer the data. It is useful because it is another factor that should be taken into effect when considering the speed of your connection.
3. What is the digital divide? What are some ways to reduce the effects of the digital divide?
The digital divide is the divide between people who have access to computers and the Internet and people who do not. Some ways to reduce the effects of the digital divide is to help get computers and the Internet to people who do not already have it.
