1. In your own words, define the concept of copyright. Why should all Internet users be aware of copyrighted material?
Copyright is a legal protection given to an individual's intellectual property that prevents others from using that property without their consent. All Internet users should be aware of copyrighted material so they do not use it without permission and face serious consequences.
2. What is the difference between digital and printed documents that makes it easier to violate copyright law with digital ones?
It is easier to access and alter digital documents and pass them off as your own work than it is with printed documents.
3. What is a peer-to-peer architecture? Provide an example of at least one well-known peer-to-peer network.
A peer-to-peer architecture involves one person owning something and sharing with others so that many people have access to it. An example would be Napster and music sharing.
4. What is the DMCA and why is it significant to copyright, especially with regards to electronic works (documents, images, videos, etc.)?
The DMCA is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and is significant because it makes it illegal to have a service or technology that is designed to circumvent copyright restrictions.
5. What are Open Access and Creative Commons? How have they impacted the sharing of digital information?
Open Access and Creative Commons promote the sharing of digital information by giving copyright rights to the owner but still allowing them to share their property online with the general public.
6. The Blown to Bits book is released under a Creative Commons (CC) license, specifically the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 license. What does this license allow people other than the authors to do? What is the relationship between the original Blown to Bits book and the newer, Blown to Bits (version 2.0) book? Did the authors of the newer version stay true to the CC license? How can you tell? (Optional) If your favorite book or movie was released with a CC license, how would you change it?
A Creative Commons license allows other people to access the document, as well as edit and share it. Blown to Bits version 2.0 is a newer version of Blown to Bits. It stays true to the CC license because it credits the authors of the original book.
7. The chapter describes three peer-to-peer networks, each of which can be used to share copyrighted works illegally. Why did the courts find that Napster and Grokster were liable for the illegal activities of it's users, while BitTorrent is not?
BitTorrent was not liable because it was not only used for illegal means like the other two sites.
8. What effect have streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify had on illegal downloading activities?
They have slowed illegal downloading activities by making it easy for users to instantly get access to TV shows, movies, and music.
9. Why was it important for Jack Andraka to have access to research articles? In general, how has access to information helped to identify problems, develop solutions, and disseminate results?
It was important for Jack Andraka to have access to research articles because he used it to find an early cure for pancreatic cancer. A greater access to information makes it easier to solve problems and share results.
10. What is your responsibility as an app developer in regards to the fair use of copyrighted works such as images and music? Give one example use of a copyrighted work in an app that follows fair use guidelines and one example that violates fair use guidelines.
It is my responsibility as an app developer to not violate the fair use of copyrighted material. An example of following copyright law would be crediting an image you use, not just taking it off the Internet without giving credit to the owner.
11. In your opinion, are YouTube users violating copyright terms when they make lyric videos? Why or why not?
Yes, because they are using the songs and profiting off of them without the consent of the original artist.
