Visual Ensemble

Visual ensemble can be seen dancing at halftime along with the marching band at the football games during the first semester, and they focus on their spring show during the second semester. Taking a twist on the Disney classic, “Peter Pan”, Richland high school’s visual ensemble danced their way through the story of “The Lost”. The characters consisted of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Tiger Lily, and a new character that Ms. Moran introduced known as Black Widow, along with other beloved characters, played respectively by Kaitlyn Tuttle, Alexis Accord, Amanda Plura, and Jordan Keese. Adding a twist to the classic, “The Lost” introduced Tinkerbell’s alter ego, Black widow, to which they proceeded to tell the story through dance. The visual ensemble girls put in a month worth of hours into practice for their spring show, even adding final touch ups an hour before opening night, and in between shows. Even with holding a supporting role, Faith Rice was one of the main reasons “The Lost” came together. She fabricated the majority of the costumes and props that were used in the show. Her work can be seen in things from Tinkerbell’s wings, to the mirror that Black Widow danced through. “The Lost” was a major success for the visual ensemble program, yielding a profit of nearly four times what they had spent on the show, giving them a solid budget for next year while helping shine some light on a program that’s not often in the focus.

A Letter to Seniors

Dear seniors,

I would like to congratulate you on making it this far. We have been through so much laughter and tears together over the years. But it is not over yet. There is still Graduation Practice and Graduation left. Our last hurrah. Graduation practice is this Friday at 8am sharp at the Coliseum. You must bring your gown and what you will wear to Graduation. Then, there is Baccalaureate at NRH Baptist Church at 2pm on Sunday. Wear your gown and church clothes underneath. Next, Senior Sunset. This will be at 8pm on Friday, May 26th, on the baseball fields. Bring your lawn chairs to watch the sunset one last time as a senior. We started with the sunrise, and now it will come to a close. Finally, Graduation. This will be the last time to make an impression as a Richland student. Come no later than 11:30 wearing caps, gowns, and the works, and be ready to be with all your classmates one last time. There is a lot of last times as a senior, so make sure you make these last two weeks count. Hang out with your friends, say thank you to your favorite teacher, make an impression. It is not too late to leave your mark at Richland.

Choirs

Richland High School’s choirs will be participating in UIL Competitions all this week. The past four months have been spent preparing for this single competition and hopefully their hard work will paid off. This will be the first UIL for our new director, Andrew Steffen, and while it’s not Teresa Hughes’ first UIL competition, they both have worked countless hours ensuring the success of the men and women in both Chorale and Rebel Men. The support the choir program receives from the parents involved, the staff involved, and friends/family is overwhelming. Although you can’t come physically to support the Richland choir, be sure to let a choir member know that you’re rooting for them.

Percussion Show

The yearly percussion show has finally arrived and will be performed this weekend. This serves as the percussionists’ spring semester concert. It's a show where different fine arts departments, including percussion, choir, visual ensemble, and theatre, have the opportunity to come together for a performance. This year the show is based on George Orwell’s 1984 and it’s titled “2+2=5”. The percussionists will be performing a mix of popular music and percussion ensembles, and because most of the pop songs do not hold a drum core, if the drum set performs they're playing parts that they transcribed themselves for the song. Preparations for the percussion show started back in January and they're practicing everyday this week and last week, staying as late as 10 to make sure their performance goes well The percussion show will be performed April 6-9 at 7pm and April 9 at 2pm adult tickets being $10 and student tickets being $5. So come watch and support these students’ hard work this weekend!

Lip Sync

Have you ever wanted to watch your peers mouth along to your favorite songs while performing funny skits on stage in the name of charity? Well then, April 13th is your lucky day. The Johnny Rebs, and those who auditioned, are hosting another Lip Sync in the RHS auditorium at 7 o’clock that night. It’s basically the last hoorah for the Johnny Rebs, and their way to celebrate the end of the year with their fellow students on a stage. The price of admission is only $5 for adults and $3 for students, not to mention all proceeds are going to the Made in the Streets charity. This charity works towards building schools and providing education to children in Kenya. So whether you’re interested in the entertainment, seeing your friends dance around, or helping give education for underprivileged kids, be sure to come to the Johnny Reb Lip Sync next Thursday.

Concert Band

This year, the Richland Honors Band had the privilege of traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana to perform at The Music for All National Festival presented by Yamaha. The opportunity for this life changing experience arose after their submission of their concert recording of last year’s program consisting mainly of Pines of Rome, a four movement symphonic poem written by Ottorino Respighi. The band this year took on the challenge of learning Music for Prague 1968, a piece by Karel Husa depicting the invasion of Prague, along with four other selections. One of the selections was Bugler’s Holiday, a work that featured Richland’s own Daniel Christensen as a trumpet soloist along with RHS graduate Patrick Byars and North Ridge Middle’s James Smith. The concert was at Butler University’s performance hall, and the Honors Band was the featured band. After three standing ovations, the band also received a clinic from a professional clinician, and each instrument had their own masterclass with a professional musician. The Honors Band Percussion also performed their own ensemble as a separate performance at the local high school. Each student who attended had opportunities to meet band students from across the country, perform in a professional setting, and learn from the best of the best musicians from around the country.

Another Shout Out to Y’all

You guys have now made it through four of our six six weeks, and Spring break is just around the corner. If you're in any AP classes you know that once break is over, it's basically full throttle towards the AP exams that happen in the first two weeks of May. But that's not until after we get back, so for now, we hope y'all have a fun, stress-free, and safe spring break.

Project Celebration

Project Celebration tickets are now on sale during lunches in the student workroom by the cafeteria. This year project celebration will be held at Main Event where everything will be unlimited until 6am, and yes, that includes food. What is project celebration? It’s a prom after party organized by the school where students can hang out, and no, formal dress is not mandatory. It’s a very fun way to end prom night, surrounded by friends, and playing each other in a friendly game of lazer tag, bowling, or in the arcade. If you haven’t already, buy your tickets now for only $25.

Art

It’s VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) season, the biggest art competition of the year for the art students, and the event that they’ve been preparing for all school year. We have a great art department here at RHS, where art students work on bi-weekly art projects from mediums ranging from pencil and charcoal, to oil paint and scratchboard. Art students have the opportunity to explore all kinds of medias and art styles until they find what they prefer, and find their artistic voice. Students in the art department have the chance to submit up to two pieces in the VASE competition each year. This year the regional competition will be Feb. 11th in Chisholm Trail High School, where BISD will compete with about 30 other districts. From there the students that receive 4’s (highest rating in the 1-4 score) have the opportunity to move to the state competition, which will be in San Antonio this year. If a student’s piece is truly amazing, they might just receive a Gold Seal, the highest achievement in the art world. Last year about 60% of the pieces that went to state were from BISD alone, even receiving 2 Gold Seals, and this year the art department hopes to increase those numbers. Once VASE is over, art students turn their attention to

the school art show which will be at Gym 3 from March 20-24th, and then to the District art competition, which will be held at the W. G. Thomas Coliseum from April 24-27th. There’s even a district wide art show, Adventures in Art, for the special art students at the Hurst Senior Activity Center on March 13th. All of these art shows are guaranteed to hold wonderful pieces from the art students, and we encourage you to give them a look. Until then, we wish the VASE competitors good luck this weekend.

Musical

Musical season has arrived here at RHS. This year our theatre department has chosen to perform “Godspell”. This is a story based on the Gospel of Matthew from the Bible, but even if you’re not familiar with this scripture, the cast does a wonderful job of telling the story and keeping the audience entertained. What to expect from this musical you may ask? Well, for starters it stars Cedric Sutton, senior, and he goes around sharing his teachings in the form of stories. The musical is divided into two acts, each with a very different feel to them. Act one is filled with entertaining jokes that will surely make you laugh, while Act two gets more serious and I would be surprised if there’s a dry eye in the audience once the musical ends. These students have been working hard ever since early November, staying after school almost every day, coming during weekends, and even coming up to the school during break. This production has been quite unique to the others so far. For starters Mrs. Haley came back from maternity leave just to direct the musical. Along with her, another familiar face came back just for the musical, this being Mikey the amazing choreographer, who gave up his time to make sure that the cast performed memorable dance numbers. But this musical did have something different to its precedents, instead of the pit being filled with RHS band, they hired a live band to add a different music style and feel to the production. So if you haven’t already seen “Godspell”, or simply wish to rewatch it, you still can! Come today, Monday, at 7 and support our theatre department. Also, if you see someone from the cast or crew, make sure to congratulate them on their hard work.

Shout out to y'all

As the first semester comes to a close, the Reveille staff wants to give a special shout out. To all of you! Each and every one of you made it through the first semester of the 2016-2017 school year, you’re halfway there! Most of you took your finals and we hope you passed them with flying colors. If you didn’t, take it as motivation to study a little harder next time! To all the AP kids, things are about to get difficult for us. Just know, the exams are only a few months away.. then it’s over! Just keep on going and the exams will be over before you know it. Thank you all for your hard work and your dedication. It is truly amazing to be apart of a student body who strives for academic greatness!

JROTC

JROTC is a school academic organization that helps around the school. Most students have probably recognized them for wearing their military uniforms around school, and for doing the representation of the colors at the beginning of football games. Yet, that's not all that they do. JROTC is in charge of the carter blood care drive, setting up the gym for school events (AP exams anyone?), and performing the raising and lowering of the flag every day, as well as other activities that help around the school. When students join JROTC they are able to join one of four teams, the academic team, the rifle team, colorguard, and PT. The academic team competes against other schools at competitions. They study SAT questions, the history of America and the flag to prepare. The rifle team is where you learn to shoot targets. The colorguard are the people who march side by side and carry the flags, they're the flag bearers in assemblies and such. And PT is physical training. Currently JROTC is doing a fundraiser with everyone’s favorite chocolate, if you're looking for a sweet snack you could go to them and help out their organization. Also, they're doing gift wrapping at the NorthEast mall this Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday. Which is a win win because if you go you get to help one of your school’s organizations, and be prepared for the holidays with an already wrapped gift. So do yourself and your school a favor and go help them out with their fundraiser, or better yet, consider joining JROTC next year.
