Frantz, Mary L. "Richard Wilson the solo piano works, 1974 - 1986 /." 1992. http://catalog.hathitrust.org/api/volumes/oclc/27024843.html  "This document centers on Wilson's style as represented in the three major works, Eclogue (1974), Fixations (1985), and Intercalations (1986). Each of these works is discussed separately and examined analytically in Chapters Two through Four. Issues that are addressed include pitch and rhythmic organization, large structural aspects, timbral and textural features, and pianistic issues.

Program Note:

Among the older meanings of fixation is:  the process of reducing a volatile spirit or essence to a permanent bodily form, such as the conversion of mercury into a solid.  This seemed to me an appropriate way to describe a composer’s effort to give shape to musical ideals that are amorphous and fleeting in their incipient state.  “Bird in Space” was inspired by certain Brancusi sculptures by that name.  “Shadowings” and “Flashback” take their titles largely because of musical procedures employed: parallel motion in the former, a parenthetical structure in the latter.

The set of three pieces is dedicated to Blanca Uribe.
