The RESULTS Seeds of Hope Award is given to local individuals who have made a significant improvement to our world. This year, RESULTS Houston is presenting the award to Chris Tomlinson for his decades of journalism shining a light on poverty and injustice at home and abroad.
Chris is the business columnist for the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News, focusing on energy, business, and policy. His commentary appears three times a week and draws on his 25 years of reporting experience. He is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth and Tomlinson Hill: The Remarkable Story of Two Families who Share the Tomlinson Name—One White, One Black.
Previously, Chris was the supervisory correspondent for the Associated Press in Austin, responsible for state government and political reporting in Texas, and a foreign correspondent, reporting from more than 30 countries, including Rwanda, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Congo. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with Special Honors in Humanities in 1992 and served in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence analyst from 1983-90.

Dr. José-Miguel Yamal
Dr. José-Miguel Yamal is a Chilean-American jazz pianist with a deep and eclectic repertoire. He has performed at many jazz festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival, and with many jazz greats. Dr. Yamal's passion for music is complemented by his love of mathematics and science. He holds a Ph.D. from Rice University and is an associate professor of biostatistics at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center School of Public Health.
Joanne Carter
RESULTS Executive Director
Dr. Joanne Carter is the Executive Director of RESULTS, based in Washington, DC. Under her direction, RESULTS leads advocacy campaigns to create more equitable policies and drive government investment toward the highest-impact solutions to poverty. Since she took the helm in 2008, RESULTS has grown to include grassroots volunteers in every state in the U.S., with international partners on five continents.
