Access Sources of Information and Research: Continue to do your research.

Task I: How can I be a smarter searcher (Part 1)?

You have learned about evaluating Web sites. Let’s see how smart a searcher you really are. Open a Word document and pair up with a table partner. Review the following sites and answer the following questions for each site. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.

Sites>

DHMO

Tree Octopus

1- What is the purpose of this site?

2- Who created it?

3- What clues tell me how trustworthy or not trustworthy is the information?

4- When was the site last updated with information?

5- How can I double check that the information is correct?

6- How current, relevant, accurate, credible, appropriate and biased are these sites?

Task J: What note taking technique skills will help me?

Note taking from a book, online resource or even from watching a video is different than taking notes in class. Taking notes from a resource to then use in your research paper, Keynote presentation, podcast, etc. involves your sharing information that you didn’t create. You have to be very careful when sharing ideas that are not your own. You did not want to plagiarize. What is plagiarism? Watch this video. Your teacher already shared a lesson on good note taking. Use those skills as you continue your research.

Task K: How can I be a smarter searcher (Part 2)?

*Boolean Searching: The librarian and your teacher will share a lesson on doing boolean searches. Remember, you are to go to books, online encyclopedias and databases before you start using search engines!

Task L: How to cite my sources?

(Source: M. Carpenter)

The following Web sites show you how to use the MLA style format for citing your resources. The librarian will use them to show you how to write a bibliography. You need to access and review the following two sites to guide you in writing your bibliography.
