Furnaces and Blowing House

Furnaces and Blowing House

In the foreground, to the left of the picture is the blowing house which housed the huge steam driven air compressors. The compressed air was directed via the cold blast main (spanning the railroad tracks) to a group of four stoves serving each furnace.

The two round vessels beside the furnace are the gas washer (foreground) and dust catcher. The gas was cleaned and used to raise steam and to heat the stoves. The dust was dumped to a hopper car and removed by rail.

There is a spiral staircase winding around both smoke stacks that gave access to the top of the stoves and to the charging platform.

While the cast house has been demolished on the nearest furnace, exposing the hearth area, the cast house survives on the far furnace.

I don't recognise the two rectangular containers in the foreground. They might be upturned redundant skips
