PFC Morris L. Baker
Morris Lee ("Jake") Baker from Kaufman county (Texas), born March 23, 1914.
Morris Lee Baker first years of service was with the 97 inf. Division. He was one of 5000 that where taken out of the Division for replacements in the invasion. Morris Lee landed in England on May 25, 1944. He landed on Utah Beach on June 10, 1944. He then got hooked up with C Co of the 60th of the 9th Division and he was them until he was wounded on July 13 near St Lo.
He was hit in the right foot a shell fragment went through his foot. He was sent back to England to the hospitle.His mother was notified that he had been sent back to the front on about November 2, 1944. He was then placed in E Co of the 47th 9 division and was with them the rest of the way.Ha was wounded in the left hand and fore arm by shell fragments on January 4,1945.If he came out of the line at that time it was just for a day or two. E Co was on nite attack for ten nites in late Feb. and early March, the were placed in reserve ont the morning of March 7. The unite of the 9 Armored captured the Remagan Bridge that after noon. E Coo was placed on trucks and trucked part of the way to the bridge and then walked the rest of the way to the bridge. The got there in the nite and crossed at first light on the morning of March 8. By all accounts the fighting was very heavy and houte to house;. He was again wounded int the left thigh on March 11, 1945 and his fighting was over. I was told that E Co was at or near full strength when the crossed the Rhine and when they were releived; taken out of the line the Co had 28 men in it.
When Morris Lee Baker got out of the Army he was discharged from the Hospitle.

Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal,
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars for battle participation in the Normandy,
Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Expert
Infantryman Badge.
Morris Lee Baker married in 1946 August 10. He had three children; David, Molly and Vickie.

He worked in pipeline construction most of his life. He ran heavy equipement and was a foreman of construction crews.
Morris Lee Baker passed away July 12, 1984 he had a heart attack, he was only 68 at the time.
