Quartz is a hard mineral (7 on Mohs' Scale of hardness) which consists of silicon dioxide, as does sand. Quartzite is the rock that forms from a sandstone when it is heated and compressed and in turn sandstone comes from sand grains which have been cemented together.
Rose Quartz
It is not known for certain what causes the rose colour in Rose Quartz but it may be due to traces of titanium, iron or manganese.
It occurs in numerous places on Schiehallion.
