Despite the continuous quality-of-life developments brought about by advances in technology, countless people around the world continue to live below the poverty line and grow hungry every day. In the US alone, one in every seven American households can’t afford dinner each night. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to find needy families in your own neighborhood. Here are some ways you can help in the fight against hunger.

Volunteer in a local charity
Nothing beats going hands-on and actively participating in feeding the hungry. There should be nonprofits in your area devoted to easing hunger. Many of these charities will gladly have you helping, if only for a few hours. Just search by zip code and type in “hunger” to start your most-welcome gesture.
Reduce waste through donation
One great way to help is by donating leftover food from big, catered events you’re involved in. Plan in advance and have the remaining food from, say, a birthday or graduation party brought to a food bank. You can do the same for extra garden harvests and fruits in your backyard.

Host a food drive
While fresh produce are important, immediate donations, canned foods that can be stored in shelves and are good for eating when needed are equally important. This is a great way to help households run by busy, single mothers. Plan the drive outside the holiday season to gather more donations from participants, then bring them to a local food pantry.
Donate money
Sometimes it’s better to donate money instead of food, as most nonprofits and charities rely on grants and donations to fight hunger. They can then use the collected money to buy food in bulk at discounted rates.
