We are excited to have David Gimberline coming down from Minnesota on November 6-8th (Fri-Sun) to teach a karate seminar on body mechanics and kata application. He has been training for over 35 years and teaches the superior body dynamics developed by Sensei Nishiyama, along with a practical self defense system based on the kata of Shotokan - Shotoryu Goshinjutsu.
We will most likely work on application of the Pinan katas, and maybe some Kushanku and Chinto. We may do some takedowns as well. We are hoping to have a big class to welcome Sensei Gimberline down to North Carolina!
Four seminars will be available:
Friday, Nov. 6th from 6pm to 9pm
Saturday, Nov 7th from 9am to 11:30am AND 12:30pm to 3:00pm
Sunday, Nov 8th from 1pm to 4pm
Location:
Carolina Pines Community Center
2305 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh, NC, 27603
To pay for Sensei Gimberline's travel expenses, the cost is $25 per person per class, or $75 for all four classes.
Cash, check, and Paypal are all options.
You can see some of Sensei Gimberline's techniques and explanations at his YouTube Channel: Kata For Self Defense.
We've both trained with Sensei Gimberline before and found his insight into application very helpful.
Let us know if you are coming to help us plan the classes accordingly. Hope to see you there!

Class description and bio:
Originally, there was only Kata...No Basics. No Sparring. No Tournaments. The Masters of Old defended themselves with the deadly movements of their Kata. Learn their secrets & discover why kata is actually more effective than kumite! This session will focus on giving you the skills necessary to analyze kata movements and develop applications that are appropriate for you as an individual. LEARN HOW KATA IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF SELF DEFENSE. Today most karateka believe that, if attacked, they would use their kumite to defend themselves, and that their kata movements would be of little value. I have come to see that just the opposite is true. Your kumite techniques could be almost worthless in self defense, while kata contains the tools to insure your survival. Open to All Styles and skill levels.

Brief Bio of David Gimberline: I have been studying Shotokan under Sensei Fusaro and Sensei Nishiyama since 1980 and achieved Sandan ranking from Nishiyama Sensei in the spring of 1994. I have been studying kata application concepts since about 1985. I've designed and taught self defense courses to men and women and also designed and taught P.O.S.T approved courses in Police Control Tactics (PCT) and defensive tactics to police officers. I've also taught seminars on application concepts to various karate groups. Without question the single largest influence on my concepts of application has been Sensei Chris Smaby. I attended 12 of his self-defense camps beginning in 1985, where I was introduced to the idea of cross-training and was exposed to different arts and systems including aikijujitsu, chin na, small circle jujitsu, kyu-sho, thai kick-boxing, kali, escrima, kendo, bojutsu, etc. I also attended additional seminars on grappling, knife defense, and silat. For developing the PCT courses for police officers, I did much research into appropriate use of force, nerve strikes, restraints, and the types of techniques that were appropriate to teach in a limited amount of time. I've extensively researched and continue to explore the history and development of our style and am currently expanding my knowledge of other styles and systems.
