This event included Alekhine, the reigning World Champion after regaining the title from Euwe and Menchik, the Women's World Champion, a title she had dominated since 1927. During WWII, Alekhine, Keres and Foltys endured playing under Nazi occupation, the Englishmen Alexander and Milner-Barry joined the code-breakers at Bletchley Park and Vera Menchik was killed in 1944 by a V1 Flying Bomb in Clapham, London. The American Reuben Fine fared better using the lull in international chess to produce the compendium Basic Chess Endings that is still regarded as the classic work on the subject.
