Hastings International 1895
This was the first Hastings International Tournament, the 86th will commence in a few months. The 1895 event was the first 'super tournament' featuring all the great players of the day including the reigning World Champon Steinitz and his successor Lasker. The American Harry Pillsbury with a score of 16.5/21 was the surpise winner ahead of Chigorin and Lasker and received the princely sum of £150 as his prize. The game Steinitz - Von Bardeleben may be found under the 'Games' tab above. A not uncommon feature of such events was for the moves to be regarded as the property of the tournament and this was the case at Hastings. Unfortunately for the organisers the Dutch player Van Lennep possessed a photographic memory and produced a long media report in Dutch thus thwarting the ambition of the organisers.Standing: Albin, Schlecter, Janowski, Marco, Blackburne, Maroczy, Schiffers, Gunsberg, Burn, Tinsley.Seated: Vergani, Steinitz, Chigorin, Lasker, Pillsbury, Tarrasch, Mieses, Teichmann.
