To coincide with the Great Exhibition, Howard Staunton organised what is recognised as the first International Chess Tournament held in London in 1851. The German player Anderssen beat Staunton 4-1 in an early knock-out round and went on to win the event much to the irritation of Staunton.Anderssen is recognised for his spectular sacrificial play and will always be remembered as the winner of the Immortal Game against Kieseritzky that was also played in London shortly after his tournament success.
