25 KW, 130 V , BRUSH LESS ALTERNATOR
It is a 3 phase homo-polar inductor type alternator designed for power generation in AC coaches. It delivers 25 KW of power at a constant DC voltage 130 +/- 2% with RRU or ERRU by controlling the field exitation.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
STATOR
The alternator consists of 2 sets of winding namely 1.Phase winding (stator winding), 2.Field winding . Both windings are accommodated in the stator. The phase windings are distributed in the small slots and field windings are concentrated in the two bigger slots. Each field coil spans half the total number of stator slots. Phase coil are connected in parallel star and field coils in series.
ROTOR
The rotor consisting of stacked stamping resembles a cogged wheel having 12 sets of teeth and slot uniformly distributed on the rotor surface and skewing the rotor axis.
OPERATION
The core of stator which is completely embraced by the field coils will retain a residual magnetism, if excited by a battery once. The flux produced by the field coils find its path through the rotor. When the rotor is rotated, the passage of the rotor teeth and slots alternatively under field offers a varying reluctance path for the flux produced by the field coils. This flux which vary periodically links with the stator coils and induces an alternator voltage in the stator coil. The frequency of the induced voltage depends on the speed of the rotor and the magnitude depends the speed of the rotor and level of excitation. The field is strengthen by a positive feedback system in the regulator to attain the desired output voltage. In case the output voltage exceeds 150 V due to failure of the control system the over voltage protection system will cut off the field supply and the generation.
