Before Pre-camp:
Parents and youth should all review the notes on back country tripping (https://sites.google.com/site/questmanitoba/back-country-canoe-tripping).
Date: Saturday, June 14, 2025
Location: Camp Amisk (tentative)
Arrival Time: Before 8:30am
Departure Time: 7:30pm (all day)
Parent Meeting: 8:45am
There will be a parent meeting beginning at 8:45. All Quest parents should be in attendance for a review of trip and camper expectations. Parents, especially parents of youth new to Quest or to canoe tripping, are strongly encouraged to also attend the first session on packing personal gear. Your youth may not be a part of the session you attend but the information at all sessions will be the same and parents have previously benefited greatly from hearing it.
Equipment to bring:
properly fitting PFD with a pealess whistle attached to it (FOX-40 or similar)
paddle (if you have one)
bag lunch (no peanuts or tree nuts please)
water bottle with water in it (no throw away bottles please)
hat
sunscreen
backpack packed with the gear you intend to bring for your Quest trip.
For planning purpose, pack as though you are going on a 3-day trip.
Remember to include your sleeping bag, foamy, and tent. Also, remember that you need to leave space in your backpack for your share of the group gear. Reviewing what and how you have packed will be part of the pre-camp.
We will also be doing some portaging practice with full packs so you can make sure you have all your straps adjusted properly. A suggested equipment list for Quest is here: https://sites.google.com/site/questmanitoba/personal-equipment-list
If any Questers are short gear of any sort, please say so before pre-camp.
There is lots of equipment available for you to borrow if you are missing something, but we need some time to get it for you.
Tenting space on back country trips with large groups can be a bit tight. The tents you bring must be appropriate for the number of people using them. Since we do not know yet who will be going on which trip, the best choice is for everyone to have a one or two person tents for tripping. Be very sure that it is a good quality tent with a full-length fly. Bring your tent to pre-camp and we will make sure it is going to serve you well.
