WHY?
Having traveled through Europe in the summer, years ago, I came across community bands and orchestras in almost every city, village, or town I visited. The musicians in these groups were usually not professional musicians, but rather neighbors and friends who came together to have fun making music. The performances were enjoyable, because you felt as if you were part of the fun, whether or not you were performing. There was such a friendly atmosphere, and in the more casual setting people let down their guardedness to reach out to strangers, like myself.
We have many amazing professional groups around Denver, but I believe we could use some less formal, community-centered, performing groups. Many people learned to play instruments in school, and have fond memories of those experiences. They have instruments sitting in closets, which they might be more inclined to play, if they had friends with which to play. We need a place and opportunity for people to continue to use those skills - both the musical and social skills. I also believe that the reasoning and creative skills, that the study of music helps develop in young people, should continue to be exercised throughout our lives.
I currently have the privilege to work with the Shriners Community Band in southeast Denver, and am open to exploring other collaborations.
My goal is to facilitate connections in my community through music.
