Equipment Guidelines

Check out the Team Handbook for more specific information regarding equipment. Also see the EMBWL Competition Guide as well.

All racers must wear a helmet with the hard shell around the ears.

The Eastern Massachusetts Buddy Werner League (our governing body) REQUIRES the use of helmets at all League events. Racers must wear a racing helmet with hard ear flaps. This is a change implemented in 2018/2019, when, previously, U8 were not required to wear hard-sided helmets.

U14 and up racers who plan to race GS in USSA sanctioned events (EMBWL events are not USSA events) must have a helmet which meets the new FIS standards. Helmets will be checked for compliance at USSA events and racers could be pulled out of the starting gate if they do not have an approved helmet.

It is recommended that racers 12+ in the market for new helmets get FIS compliant helmets as the regulations could change in the future.

It is easiest to order a hard shell helmet online. These helmets are not always easy to find. Tip: Try on sizes of common helmet brands (Giro, POC, Briko, UVEX) at a local ski shop and then order the hard-sided helmet you need online.

Skis and Boots

  • The only other equipment requirement for EMBWL is that no rear-entry boots can be used. Boots should fit well and be flexible.
  • Racers and parents should get to know their equipment. Make sure everything fits and is ready to go prior to the season.
  • Many local ski shops offer ski rentals, and even racer-specific ski rentals. Our racers should have one pair of soft-flex skis. (Soft-flex skis are most often those rented to youth skiers and are perfect for young racers).
  • Some older, more experienced racers (14+) may choose to use race-specific skis (SL-Slalom or GS - Giant Slalom or Multi-event skis). If choosing one pair, we would recommend SL skis.
  • Skis should be race-ready: bottoms flat filed, edges sharpened, tips and tails de-tuned and waxed for snow conditions and snow temperature. This can be done at home or through local ski shops ski tuning offerings.
  • For some tips on tuning, check out these videos:

Googles, Jackets, and Suits

  • Goggles are recommended for all racers.
  • Please make sure to dress appropriately for cold weather. Always check temperatures in advance and dress warmly. Remember, the temperature on the chairlift and hill will be colder than it is at home. Layering works best. But also bring extra socks, gloves, etc., in case the ones you are using get wet. Many racers (and coaches!) will use hand and foot warmers.
  • There is no race uniform, however some older racers choose to wear GS race suits.
  • On a year by year basis, the PHST may also offer the opportunity to purchase a team jacket. However, these are not required.
