The History of the Prospect Hill Ski Team

The Prospect Hill Ski Club started in the late 1960’s at the Prospect Hill Ski Area in Waltham, MA. The team is one of the oldest members in the Eastern Massachusetts Buddy Werner League (EMBWL). Prospect Hill Ski Team has won 16 championships beginning with their first championship in 1978. The team thrived in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. In the early 1980’s, the Prospect Hill Ski Club was awarded the Youth Program Award of the Year by the United States Ski Association. For many years the hill was operated by the City of Waltham. Due to difficult economic times in the 1990’s, the Prospect Hill Ski Area was closed. Prospect Hill Ski Area is now a member of the Long Lost Ski Areas (http://www.nelsap.org/ma/prospecthill.html).

The team and the name stayed together and continued training at Nashoba Valley and Wachusett Mountain until it found its new home at the Blue Hills Ski Area around 2002. Once settled at the Blue Hills, the team decided to add snowboarding as a club sport. As popular as snowboarding is today, there is currently not many youth entry-level competition for snowboarders. The PHST decided to dismantle the team after 6 years. The team changed its name to the Prospect Hill Ski Team.

Today, the Prospect Hill Ski Team, Inc. is a 501c (3) not for profit organization. Along with being a member of the EMBWL, we are also a club team for the USSA (United State Ski and Snowboard Association, and the Massachusetts Tri-State League (page 27). We continue to be an introductory ski race program. We encourage, promote and advance the sport of skiing and ski racing by having an emphasis on active participation with a view to the safety and education of the members and to promote good fellowship among skiers.

The Prospect Hill Ski Team is comprised of many young racers from the ages of 5-18 years old, from Waltham and many communities that surrounding the Blue Hills Ski Area and as far away as Rhode Island. The management of the Blue Hills Ski Area has embraced the team. We appreciate the relationship that has developed through the years. Even with the many transitions to the team we have kept the spirit of the Prospect Hill Ski Team and the area alive. We welcome new members and share our enthusiasm about our grass roots program. Many families and coaches return to the team so their young racers experience the joy of team and make the same great memories and friendships they did, often lasting a lifetime.

When wearing PHST gear, it is not uncommon to be stopped by young and old and be told many wonderful stories about the team and the hill. You will feel proud to be a part of the team.

We continue to grow and are getting stronger every year.
