PMB RATIONALE
The capacity to communicate on a second language has been one of the key competencies set for future european citizens in the context of the Life Long Learning program of the European Comission. To confront this challenge national and regional governments have set Plurilingual Educational Plans to drive such a long term goal.
The Maracena Bilingual Program (PMB) is the result of an inter-institutional initiative between the University of Granada, the Educational Administration in Granada, the Town Hall of Maracena, and public and semi-private schools, also in Maracena. The collaboration involves students from the degree courses of English Philology and Initial Teacher Training for Primary Education at the University of Granada. These students act as mentors for small groups of primary school pupils in order to provide support and training for: a) general English purposes, b) instrumental English in the bilingual classroom, and c) understanding and expression of contents in non-linguistic bilingual classes.
This initiative develops on previous projects whereby undergraduate students have provided peer mentoring services in addition to support for primary school pupils in the above-mentioned town. The implementation process of this initiative consist of several steps:
(a) setting the agreement among staff and professors from both Degrees,
(b) selecting a group of University students, who will act as a Mentors for Primary school pupils,
(c) holding two sessions to train and inform future mentors on their tasks and responsibilities with the Mentees and the mentoring process,
(d) designing the protocol to be used to monitor how mentoring sessions evolve according to some pre-established criteria, (e) implementing the Mentoring sessions during the second semester, and
(f) Monitoring and Evaluating processess and outputs during the focus group session scheduled by the end of semester.
