Maria G. N. Musoke is heralded as being the first Ugandan woman to become a Professor of Information Science as well as the first Ugandan woman to hold a PhD in Information Science, which she obtained from the University of Sheffield, UK. The results of her PhD work have, among other things, led to the revision of the ‘Slawson and Shaugnessy formula’ as reported in the editorial of the BMJ 2002;325:983 (2 November). She also holds a Masters of Librarianship and Information Science from the University of Wales, UK. Her other academic honours include a Bachelor of Science and a concurrent Diploma in Education both from Makerere University.
After her first graduation as a Biological scientist, Maria crossed over and did a Post-graduate Diploma in Librarianship that introduced her to a new profession. She then started her career as a Librarian at Makerere University Main Library, before becoming a Librarian at Albert Cook Medical Library for 4years. She then rose to Senior Librarian in charge of Acquisitions and processing of Medical literature, and later to Deputy University Librarian in-charge of the Medical Library. She was thereafter appointed Senior Librarian in charge of Albert Cook Medical Library. She was earlier appointed the first Documentalist of the then Department of Women Studies, for which she is one of the founder members. Prof. Musoke was appointed University Librarian/Director of Makerere University Library from 2004-2009 and re-appointed for a second term of five years from January 2010 – December 2014.
From January 2015, Prof Musoke transferred to the Makerere University East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS) as a Professor. She was previously teaching at EASLIS on a part time basis and supervising students. She has mentored many LIS professionals, has done research, presented at many conferences and has over 20 publications to her name.
She is currently writing a book on health information based on her research on that topic for many years.
