Maria G N Musoke – a lady of many achievements: She has received many local and international awards, honours and other forms of recognition for her contribution to information science particularly focusing on health and women
She was the first Uganda woman to get a Phd in Information Science in 2001 from the University of Sheffield, UK;
In 2001, the then Dr Musoke contested an ICT stories international competition and won. Her story was titled ‘Simple ICTs reduce maternal mortality in rural Uganda’ http://www.iicd.org/stories/articles/Story.import47
She became one of the first two Ugandan women on Makerere University’s Top Management in 2004, and actually one who got to that position without affirmative action.
She was the first Ugandan woman to head Makerere University Library services in 2004;
Since she returned from her Phd training, Prof Musoke has introduced two new courses at Makerere University, which were taught for the first time: the courses are: ‘Health information systems and services’ taught at Masters level in EASLIS since 2001/2 academic year; and the second is a cross-cutting course for Graduate students and researchers titled ‘Information competence and management that was started in 2005.
In 2008, The Document delivery and Resource sharing section of the International Federation of Library Association (IFLA), selected Dr Musoke’s paper as the best: they wrote: “We were very happy with all of our papers and speakers in Quebec, who provided an excellent global overview, from Canada, Singapore, Uganda and Austria. First Ugandan woman to become a Professor of Information science and attain a Gender Equality Award in 2010;
She is a member of many international and local Governing boards, eg Regional Centre for Research, Documentation on Women, Gender and Peace building in the Great Lakes Regiona representing Uganda, 2011 to date; Research4Life Advisory Council member 2013-2016; International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Health and Bioscience Libraries Section Standing committee member 2011 todate, Annual International Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries (QQML) Advisory committee member 2011 to date.
In Uganda, she serves on various Governing boards, Councils and committee such as: The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NAFIRRI) Management Committee member, Healthnet Uganda, Kulika Uganda, Chairperson of the Governing Board 2011-2013; Kampala District Land Board member 2011-2014. University Council member of Muteesa 1 Royal University and Kisubi Brothers University.
At Makerere, she transformed the University library from what it was in 2004 to an information unit it became by December 2014 when she completed her ten years as University librarian. She professionalized the library services and continues to mentor, counsel and guide many younger librarians and information professionals.
