SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPRINGS AHEAD

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPRINGS AHEAD

With winter almost behind us, we wrap up our first two venues. Bowling ended on Saturday, March 1st with our athletes competing in their first area competition. All six of our athletes excelled in the competition, with Kyle, Tavius and Tyler winning first place in their respective divisions. Sari and Briyon captured second place ribbons and Abby picked up a third place ribbon. Everyone had a terrific time and athletes and parents went home with plenty of smiles and high fives. Basketball will be wrapping up on March 25th. Athletes, under the expert coaching of JD Owens and Matt Hall are learning the fundamentals of dribbling, shooting, passing, and teamwork. All athletes are having a wonderful time, as we see their skills improving every week.

Two new training sessions have started in March. Our first track and field practice was held at the track by N.B. Clements Jr. High on March 8th. Coach Tameki Cole and her dedicated assistants are working with our athletes on running, the softball throw, and will be starting on the long jump and other events. Our athletes will be working hard in preparation for their first competition on April 26th, the Area 16 Track and Field Meet in Colonial Heights. Athletes that excel may be selected for the next level of competition, the State Games at the University of Richmond on June 6th-8th.

In addition to our track and field venue, Prince George County Special Olympics is also sponsoring swimming training. Coaches Susan Myers and Kim Gibbs will be working with our athletes every Monday evening from 7pm to 8pm at the Petersburg YMCA. No prior swim experience is needed. Bring your swimsuit and towel and come and make a splash!

Athletes who wish to participate in the aforementioned activities should contact Matt Hall or Connie Wilcoxson at 733-2700. Athletes need to be eight years old or older and have a completed a Special Olympics physical before they participate. Parents are encouraged to attend all practices and competitions and cheer their athletes on.

Let's all jump on the bandwagon, join Prince George County Special Olympics and have fun! You will have the ride of your life!! Cheers and high fives to all our athletes!!!
