Scratch

Scratch is a project of the MIT Media Lab, Lifelong Kindergarten Group and was designed as a programming environment for kids 8-16 years old. Scratch can be used to program games, stories, animations, and more. Scratch also has an online community where creations can be shared.

Scratch Explorations:

1. New to Scratch? Complete the Getting Started Intro and then choose one or more of the following:
   • Draw 2D Shapes - Remix (click See Inside and then Remix) Program Blocks for drawing a square
     • Put the blocks together so that the pencil draws a square.
     • Change the code to draw the square with less blocks - Hint: Use a Repeat Control block.
     • Ask what shape you should draw and add code to draw: a triangle, a pentagon, an octagon, and a circle. Student Examples
   • Complete one of more of the following Step by Step tutorials:
     • Animate Your Name
     • Cartoon Network Hide & Seek
     • Dance, Dance, Dance
2. Used Scratch before and want more of a challenge? Head over to Create on the Scratch website and do one of more of the following:
   • Draw your initials.
   • Create an All About Me project. See some student examples and one I created about me.
   • Create a Math Facts (or other subject area) review game for your students.
   • Code a song. Remix Play Me A Song and add a 2nd sprite and make this a round or create your own song.

Scratch is currently only available on devices that can support Flash which means it will run on desktops, laptops, and Chromebooks, but not on iPads. If you are looking for something that works on an iPad, check out ScratchJr or Tynker or Code Studio.
