Goals & Overview
From Dante’s Divine Comedy to the liberation of the Roman Jews from the ghetto in 1870, the powerful idea of the Holy Land has shaped past and present civilizations worldwide. The goals of this course are: to introduce you to Italian literature, which, from the beginning, found inspiration in the Holy Land; to develop a critical, cross-cultural inquiry into ethical and political controversies related to the Holy Land-Israel-Palestine from the Middle Ages to the present time; to analyze the interaction between cultural or religious differences and aesthetic representations about the Land. Combining online learning, in-class lessons, and “flipping the class,” you will explore masterpieces of Italian literature, foster critical thinking through group discussions and personal essays, and develop teamwork through group tasks. This course is taught in English with the option of an Italian Preceptorial for Italian majors and minors.
