ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

LABORATORY FOR ATMOSPHERIC AND SPACE PHYSICS (LASP), CU-BOULDER, CO

2013-present: Visiting Research Scientist, part time.

Supervise and mentor for one graduate student and one post-doctoral fellow. Perform research on Hall MHD and on rotating stratified turbulence, dual energy cascades and mixing properties using large high-resolution direct numerical simulations.

NATIONAL CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH (NCAR), Boulder, CO

2013-present: Senior Scientist, Emeritus.

2000-2013: Director of the Geophysical Turbulence Program (GTP), Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geosciences (IMAGe); Senior Scientist & Section Head, Turbulence Numerics Team, IMAGe.

Lead and organized expansion of inter-disciplinary research and education on multi-scale interactions, at the root of many obstacles in climate and weather modeling and in the prediction of extreme events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, drought, hail, or coronal mass ejections. Supervised the development of tools that are at the forefront of peta-scale computing and beyond, e.g. with a hybrid parallelizing algorithm. Built international teams in order to seek and obtain large computer resources to perform pioneering ``hero’’ runs for magnetohydrodynamic, and for rotating stratified turbulence. Strengthened the Institute’s record of excellence in innovative research and tool development. Organized scientific, education and outreach activities for GTP in order to network with university colleagues in the US and abroad, and to inform and mentor junior staff in relevant issues and new tools through a diverse seminar, visitor and workshop program. Participated in the development of a coherent strategic vision for NCAR and for GTP. Supported staff development, and also identified funds for junior scientists.

EARTH AND SUN SYSTEM LABORATORY (ESSL, NCAR), Boulder, CO 2006-2009: Deputy Director

Assisted the new Director with issues related to high performance computing, multi-scale modeling, as well as budget, and staff management. Continued building a strategic vision for the new Laboratory. Replaced Director on NCAR and UCAR boards and other committees during his outside activities. Seconded Director on staff issues.

EARTH AND SUN SYSTEM LABORATORY, NCAR, Boulder, CO

2004-2006: First Director, in an acting capacity

Created a new entity from four existing scientific divisions, put together a new management structure for ~ 400 scientific and administrative staff, supervised a $20 Million budget and operating plans and led Annual Budget Reviews. Strategized with division directors to develop a coherent vision allowing for new opportunities and synergies. Chaired Committee for the creation of a new Mathematics Institute. Initiated regular meetings with staff, acted as mentor to junior and minorities, and dealt with personnel issues. Developed new directions for new funding.

OBSERVATOIRE DE LA CÔTE D’AZUR, Nice, France

1998-2000: Director, Cassini Laboratory (CNRS and Education Nationale)

Managed a laboratory of ~ 50 staff, wrote annual reports and developed a strategic vision for the laboratory with scientific staff. Identified new funds for a new mid-scale computer in collaboration with other laboratories, and for a new software engineer, as well as for the general functioning of the laboratory. Created bridges between thematic teams.

CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE, Paris & Nice, France

1974-2000: Attachée de seconde classe to Directrice de Recherche de première classe (Scientist 1 to 4 equivalent)

Performed research at the international level, pioneered tools in computational fluid dynamics for turbulence, engaged in strategizing; built and led a team of young scientists toward successful long-term research goals.

SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS IN REFEREED JOURNALS
