MANNGIS is focusing on a key perennial crop, the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana; Clusiaceae), as one of the most desirable tropical fruits in South-East Asia. Mangosteen’s place of origin and cultivation history remain unknown, but it is believed to have originated from a wild relative species in the Malay archipelago. Garcinia malaccensis and G. hombroniana are often cited as candidates, although this needs to be verified. MANNGIS will allow: (i) unravelling the respective status of these species, as well as the cultivation history of mangosteen; (ii) identifying zones of high or particular genetic diversity to be conserved; (iii) contributing to the establishment of conservation, sustainable management and use.
