Mission Statement
" Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope."
Brief History of Organization
Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. The non-profit organization addresses issues of poverty, homelessness and affordable housing shortage through the initiation of construction or rehabilitation of houses meant to help eligible low income households to access decent living conditions.
Construction and rehabilitation operations are financed by the “Fund for Humanity”, a revolving fund sustained through new homeowners’ house payments, no interest loans and donations.
The Habitat for Humanity concept was born in 1968 when the Fullers got in touch with Minister Clarence Jordan from Koinonia Farm in Georgia designed a subdivision of 42 houses that were built with the help and efforts of volunteers and donors then sold to families in need at no profit and no interest.
In 1973, Habitat for Humanity concept was exported internationally and particularly to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) with an ambitious, yet successful project that lasted three years to offer a shelter to 2000 people.
In 1984, Habitat for Humanity International gained a considerable notoriety when former US president Jimmy Carter and his wife joined the movement. Their personal involvement gave the organization more visibility nationwide that saw the number of its affiliates and supporters increasing dramatically.
“Today, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 500,000 houses, sheltering 2.5 million people worldwide.”
Greater Muncie, Indiana Habitat for Humanity (GMIHFH) or Muncie Habitat
In early 1986, Reverend Fred Dare, Pastor of Community United Church of Christ and one of his parishioners, Sharon Brown, came in touch with Habitat for Humanity International, and decided to start a Muncie affiliate that was officially established by December the same year.
The first Habitat home in Muncie was dedicated on April 1988 and the second followed shortly after in 1989.
Through 1993, Muncie Habitat functioned as a volunteer organization building only in Saturdays. But substantial donations of storage spaces, empty buildings and construction supplies and tools allowed the organization to gain more stability. In October 1993, Muncie Habitat got its first office space that was donated by Wayside Mission and a year later the organization hired its first Executive Director.
By the end of 1996 Muncie Habitat has built a total of 18 houses in Muncie. Construction operations prospered as the organization purchased a permanent office and as the number of volunteers, donations and grants increased.
In 2008 Muncie Habitat had served 85 families in Muncie and would reach its 100th partner family in 2011.
