Re-Imagined Sherlock Holmes

SHERLOCK HOLMES ─ RE-IMAGINED

Sherlock Holmes, the world's "only unofficial consulting detective", was first introduced to readers in the novel A Study in Scarlet published by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. However, it was with the subsequent publication of short stories, starting with of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, that the master sleuth grew tremendously in popularity, later to become one of the most beloved literary characters of all time.

In this book series, the original stories penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes and his devoted friend and biographer Dr John H. Watson have been amusingly illustrated using only LEGO® brand minifigures and bricks. The illustrations recreate, through custom designed LEGO® models, the composition of the black and white drawings by Sidney Paget that accompanied the original publication of these adventures appearing in The Strand Magazine. Paget’s iconic illustrations are largely responsible for the popular image of Sherlock Holmes, including his deerstalker cap and Inverness cape, details never mentioned in the writings of Conan Doyle.

This uniquely illustrated collection, which features some of the most famous and enjoyable cases investigated by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson, including A Sandal in Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, and The Adventure of the Dancing Men, is sure to delight enthusiasts of LEGO®, as well as fans of the Great Detective, both old and new.

221B BAKER STREET MODEL - MINIFIGURE SCALE

Here is my interpretation of 221B Baker Street, the legendary residence of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson. My model is based on various depictions of Baker Street presented in books and on film. Given that 221B did not exist when Conan Doyle wrote his Sherlock Holmes stories (street numbers in Baker Street only went as high as 85 until around 1930) and the fact that there are inconsistencies in the original stories regarding the details of 221B (such as the presence of a bow window), there are a myriad of different representations of 221B and thus not everyone will agree with my design.

Below are a few photos of the designed and furnished interior of the first floor (second floor for those of you from the United States), which consists of a hallway leading to a large sitting-room overlooking Baker Street in which Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson received clients as well as Holmes’s bedroom at the rear of the flat. Many of the furnishings of these rooms, such as the fireplace, tables, chairs and oil lamps, were used in creating the published illustrations for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – Re-Imagined book Series.

A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA: Sherlock Holmes is hired by the King of Bohemia to recover a photograph from a former mistress which may be used to prevent his impending engagement to a Scandinavian princess. Holmes employs several disguises, as well as a few pyrotechnics, to discover the location of the compromising photograph, only to be outsmarted by the clever and alluring Miss Irene Adler, later known by the honourable title of ‘the woman’.

THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are called on to investigate the bizarre proceedings of The Red-Headed League, a philanthropic society which promotes the interests of men with red hair by paying them handsomely to perform small tasks. Holmes soon realizes that The League is not as charitable as it appears but rather part of an ingenious criminal plot involving the fourth smartest man in London.

A CASE OF IDENTITY: Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income, visits Sherlock Holmes to request his assistance regarding the mysterious disappearance of her fiancé, Hosmer Angel, from the carriage that was conveying him to their wedding. Holmes effortlessly deduces what has really happened from his residence on Baker Street, but chooses not to inform his client as he fears she will not believe him.

THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY: Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard summons Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to Herefordshire to investigate the murder of a wealthy landowner named Charles McCarthy. Holmes, donning his ‘travelling-cloak and close-fitting cloth cap’, carefully examines the crime scene and soon unravels the mystery involving a secret criminal past, thwarted love, and blackmail.

THE FIVE ORANGE PIPS: John Openshaw visits Baker Street to consult Sherlock Holmes as to the mysterious deaths of both his uncle and father upon the arrival of letters containing five dried orange pips and bearing the mark “K.K.K.”. The young gentleman further relates that he too has received a similar envelope with instructions to surrender some papers. Holmes quickly deduces that his client faces imminent danger from a secret society in America.

THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP: Dr. Watson accompanies Sherlock Holmes to Kent, to investigate the strange disappearance of Neville St. Clair, a respectable country businessman. A disfigured beggar is arrested for the murder of the missing man as some clothes of Neville St. Clair were recovered from his room above an opium den. Holmes surmises, however, that the truth is less sinister and simply an exceptional case of mistaken identity.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE BLUE CARBUNCLE: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate the curious discovery of a blue carbuncle in the crop of a Christmas goose abandoned by a man during a scuffle with some street ruffians. Holmes makes a series of deductions concerning the owner of a tattered old hat recovered along with the goose and thus sets out on the trail of the audacious thief who stole the precious stone five days previously.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND: A distraught young woman named Helen Stoner arrives at Baker Street early one morning to ask Sherlock Holmes for help as she fears that her life is being threatened by her stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott. At Stoke Moran, the estate where Miss Stoner and her stepfather live, Holmes carefully inspects the recent, but unnecessary, repairs to the manor-house and in doing so exposes a murderous plot.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE ENGINEER’S THUMB: One morning a young hydraulic engineer, Mr. Victor Hatherley, visits Dr. Watson’s surgery requiring medical attention as his thumb has been severed during a murderous attack. Watson dresses the wound and then takes his patient around to Baker Street to consult with Sherlock Holmes, who makes sense of the strange happenings upon hearing the engineer’s story, but is unable to apprehend the criminals.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE NOBLE BACHELOR: Sherlock Holmes is consulted by Lord Robert St. Simon whose wife, Hatty Doran, disappeared shortly after their wedding. Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard is convinced that culpability rests with Miss Flora Millar, a former acquaintance of Lord St. Simon. Holmes, though, quickly discerns the true fate of Miss Doran as he realizes that the solution to this delicate problem resides in her past back in the United States.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE BERYL CORONET: Banker Alexander Holder has been entrusted with the safekeeping of the precious Beryl Coronet, one of the most valuable treasures of the nobility. Afraid to leave the valuable piece of jewellery at the bank, he brings it home, only to have a piece of the crown broken off and three beryls stolen. Holder appeals to Sherlock Holmes to help recover the precious stones and thus avoid a personal and national scandal.

THE ADVENTURE OF THE SIX NAPOLEONS: While visiting Baker Street, Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard recounts a peculiar case he is currently working. Someone has been breaking into homes for the apparently senseless act of seizing and destroying plaster busts of the French Emperor.
