They spoke a sámi dialect that has disappeared in the middle of the 19th century. Only little is known of that dialect. Some sámi words: kokke (kuukas) = pitkä = long; kallo = otsa = forehead, kallokas is a reindeer skin shoe; koarvi = korva = streamy part of a river (also ear). See more information: Kemi sámi
Below you can see the word vocabulary by Jaakko Fellman made in 1826. The vocabulary contains words from Inari, Sompio and Kuolajärvi (Salla). The Kuolajärvi dialect is supposedly closest to what the Kuusamo area lapps were using. The dialect difference to the current sámi languages is remarkable.
