Courses

Geol 07 Earth Time and Life

How rocks and fossils are used to interpret the history of Earth's geosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and life forms.

Geol 122 Petrology

Team taught the sedimentological portion with metamorphic and igneous petrologist colleagues. An intro to physical and chemical sediment classification leads to discussions of diagenesis and interpretations of sediment provenance.

Geol 124 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

Flipped classroom of online lectures and in-class activities and labs including 4 Bay Area field trips provides students with hands-on experience making sed/strat observations in the classroom and field.

Geol/Biol 142 Paleontology

Study of the major groups of fossils and their use in interpreting the geological, ecological, and evolutionary history of the Earth and lessons for conservation. A course-based research project engages undergraduate students in specimen-based mass extinction paleoecological research.

Geol 145 Earth System Science

Project-based course examining perturbations and anthropogenic impacts to the Earth System. With a focus on sustainability, students pursue topics including carbon sequestration, natural hazards, and a life-cycle analysis of consumer market products.

Geol 180 Undergraduate Topics

A weekly meeting to introduce undergraduate and graduate students in the GEOPAths program to the Hidden Curriculum. Topics included study skills and navigating faculty expectations, developing a CV and resume, networking at job fairs, developing a personal web presence and academic portfolio.

Geol/Biol 242 Advanced Paleontology.

Group discussions of classic themes and new developments in paleontological research. Lab activities on analysis of paleontological data using frequentist statistics and data visualization in R. Class project topics vary.

Geol 285 Graduate Seminar.

Group discussion of scientific literature on mass extinctions. Topics considered geologic biases, ecological and evolutionary outcomes, and lessons for modern climate change.
