The Gabriola Peace Dove

The Gabriola Peace Dove, 2001

Gabriolans have all been deeply affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and our hearts and sympathies go to all those who died and to the loved ones they left behind. In the wake of this event there is shock and sadness, and emotions run very high. But we believe that retaliating with violence against innocent civilians would only breed more violence and would ensure that future generations will live in fear with mistrust and suffering.

The only way to ensure that the tragedy of September 11 th and similar tragedies around the world do not happen again is to build bridges of love, respect and understanding among all people Only love leads to peace with justice.

The Gabriola peace dove was first displayed in 1984 by some of our neighbours who were working for peace. At this time we think it is appropriate for all of us to show our support for peace and justice by displaying the ancient symbol of the dove.

Let this be a sign to all that Gabriolans are committed to peace.

The Gabriola Peace Dove 2021

Twenty years have passed, and someone is asking how they can acquire a Gabriola Peace Dove.

The 9/11 Peace Doves were made by Jay Mussell and Ted Reeve, and in two sizes - the original larger size and a smaller one easier to ship as a gift. For a few years, we sold them at Page's on Gabriola, all proceeds going to the food bank.

The Dove is easy to copy and is not copyrighted. There is no charge, but if you feel like making a donation to your nearest food bank or another caring organisation, that would be appropriate.

We are happy to send the Gabriola Peace Dove on further flights, in the cause of Peace, and in memory of Jay and Ted and the original members of the Gabriola Island Peace Organization.
