Phil Leung has an active business interest in Greater China since 1978. Phil’s work life began in Canada. He joined Burns Foods Limited in 1974 and was appointed Chief Microbiologist for the nation-wide group based in Winnipeg. Returning to Hong Kong in 1978 he was recruited by Dairy Farm International Holdings, a subsidiary of British conglomerate Jardine Matheson and Asia’s largest food company at the time. While as Production Manager at DFIH he was a core member of the China project team from 1979 to 1984. Notable achievements of DFIH/Maxim Caterers included the founding of China’s first foreign joint venture in 1980 – Beijing No. 1 Aircraft Catering Limited. In 1984 he became General Manager of Guangzhou People’s Refrigerated Foods Limited, DFIH’s inaugural food manufacturing investment in the PRC. Phil joined the Seagram Company Limited in 1986 and was named Managing Director – China in 1988. Shanghai Seagram Limited was established in the same year. Amid stringent foreign investment policies favoring other manufacturing sectors Shanghai Seagram was the first beverage alcohol joint venture to be approved by the Chinese government in the eighties. With Seagram’s acquisition of ‘Martell and Company S. A.’ resulting in the consolidation of their respective country operations Phil was given additional responsibility to oversee Martell’s winery interest in Tianjin. Ending eighteen years of corporate life Phil started PL Consultants Company Limited (“PLC”) in 1992 to begin a new career in business consulting and private investment. Phil is considered a pioneer in angel investment in China, a western practice he embraced through some of his projects since the early nineties (one of few examples was Mundoro Mining Inc., a TSX Main Board company listed in 2005). Among these he co-founded Top Result/MediaNation Inc. in 1991, China’s first outdoor advertising media company (listed on the HKSE/GEM in 2002). Most of PLC’s clients listed below are publicly-traded multi-national corporations, their combined investments in China to date has exceeded US$ 1 billion.
