Here's Chris showing great form with a balance exercise using the swiss ball.
Balance is an important aspect of fitness for many reasons. Perhaps you're been experiencing loss of balance, or perhaps you want to improve your balance skills for a particular sport like snow skiing or water skiing or surfing.
There are many reasons our ability to balance can be compromised:
weakness in certain muscles
faulty walking or movement patterns
inner ear issues
vision issues
some illnesses
ageing
blood pressure
neurological issues
medication
and so on ...
If you have been experiencing a loss of balance regularly, or it has been getting worse, then its best to seek medical help to check if there's some underlying condition.
There are lots of exercises you can do to help improve your balance, whether for the skill or to improve a declining sense of balance.
Exercises will help train weak muscles, improve any muscle imbalances, strengthen your core, and improve your coordination. Any exercises need to be appropriate to your health profile, level of fitness and ability, and specific to your diagnosis. Always seek help, or at least set up a safe environment, before attempting any balance exercises.
Some examples are: standing on one foot; walking an imaginary beam; single leg squats; core (abs) strengthening exercises;
right up to the more challenging and complex exercises like: standing on a balance board or bosu ball; kneeling on a swiss ball - (as Chris is doing in the photo); or even standing on a swiss ball.
