She walked into my Maungaraki studio feeling hesitant.
She’d tried to start exercising several times before — at gyms, with classes, even at home — but each attempt ended the same way:
Pain.
Overwhelm.
Or simply giving up because her body didn’t feel ready.
What worried her most was something deeply personal: she didn’t want to experience the same physical decline she had seen in her mother later in life. She wanted strength, confidence, and the ability to handle everyday tasks without fear that her body couldn’t cope.
This is a real client in her 50s who was referred to me by an existing client.
Instead of telling her to “push harder” or throwing her into a complicated routine, we began the opposite way:
Simple movements she could perform comfortably
A pace that matched how her body felt on the day
Corrective exercises based on The BioMechanics Method to support her knees and lower back
Gradual strength progression to build confidence step by step
This is the same approach I use with many of my clients here in Lower Hutt — especially for adults returning to exercise after time away or recovering from aches and niggles. Real progress comes from meeting the body where it is today.
As she grew stronger, we:
Added more challenging movements
Increased resistance
Expanded her workout routine at a rate she could maintain
Built habits that felt sustainable, not stressful
One of the biggest shifts was emotional:
She stopped feeling anxious about “failing again” and started looking forward to training. Our sessions became something positive in her week — a place she could succeed.
Today she:
Turns up consistently
Feels stronger at work and home
Moves with more confidence
Knows she can keep progressing without fear of injury
Her biggest win wasn’t just lifting heavier weights — it was reclaiming belief in her body.
If you’ve been away from exercise for a while, or past attempts have left you sore or discouraged, you’re not alone.
In my private Maungaraki studio, I help people rebuild strength safely, with programmes tailored to their body — not someone else’s.
If you’d like to talk about starting again in a way that feels achievable, safe, and encouraging, I’m here and happy to help.
