If you've been away on holiday and have also taken a break from your exercise routine, it can be a real challenge to get restarted. Here are my 5 simple tips to help restart that routine.
Choose a small workout that you can easily do. It makes it less of a hurdle. This will help you re-start the routine. After a break, a relatively easy workout can still challenge your body.
For the first workout, halve the weights, resistance, time, or number of sets, and try stepping it back up over the next 2 weeks. In my experience it takes around 2 weeks to restart those routines.
Similar to 1, this is about helping to restart the routine. If you overdo it, you are likely to cause muscles soreness or even injury, which both work against restarting.
Make an appointment with yourself (or your trainer) for the next 2 weeks workouts. Appointments create a sense of commitment which is more likely to motivate you.
Get on the scales or measure your waist and note the measurement, or find that favourite pair of pants to try on, and note the tightness. Setting a starting point, even if it is bad news, can be motivating, and it sets you up to monitor your success.
If you’re having trouble getting started, find a Personal Trainer, or hook up with a friend or colleague to workout with. Making a commitment to someone else may be just the thing to start you off on track.
