LIS 590: Computer Supported Collaborative *
A place for notes...
Week 3:
Method
I'm somewhat familiar with the CSCW proceedings, having to have to go through the material for a couple of papers in the past. I've attended just a handful of the conferences in the area, but some of the names were familiar, even from way back in 1996.
I started with names that I recognized - looking at topics that I either expected or was surprised to see their names alongside. The small amount of evidence, in the abstract and title, helped in constructing a narrative of how they got to where they are in their research trajectory.
Topics:
there are several functions to the papers - some as time capsules of existing tools - others as something with a bit longer shelf-life trying to advance the kind of work that is possible
From ACM CSCW
Identifying and analyzing multiple threads in computer-mediated and face-to-face conversations
Voice loops as cooperative aids in space shuttle mission control
Re-place-ing space: the roles of place and space in collaborative systems
Getting others to get it right: an ethnography of design work in the fashion industry
Back to labor: returning to labor process discussions in the study of work
Thunderwire: a field study of an audio-only media space
Documents and professional practice: “bad” organisational reasons for “good” clinical records
Computer support for clinical practice: embedding andevolving protocols of care
lowered fidelity - some of the cognitive features
threaded conversation
HF - voice loops in traffic/space op
relationships to physical spaces - what functions are supported well, and what metaphors break down? place vs. space
protocols in systems design
some implementation papers - case studies of working with the tools over time - methodology - emipirical, ethnographic, longitudinal - only a few with long direct quotes from participants
synthetic space - old / idiosyncratic term for virtual?
issues of awareness and disruption - impact studies
studies of work - non-computer heavy work
From JCSCW - 1995 + 1996
The coordination of work activities: Cooperation and conflict in a hospital context
Information needs in technical work settings and their implications for the design of computer tools
Coordination mechanisms: Towards a conceptual foundation of CSCW systems design
Collaborative conceptual design: A large software project case study
From the social to the systematic
Why people do and don't wear active badges: A case study
Time, technology and groups: An integration
more of a focus on dealing with automation and automated agents in the journal - special issue? - also on theoretical concerns, like agreement and cooperation modeling...
