Every year the United States imports around $25 billion worth of diamonds*. However, a portion of these precious gems have been involved in terrible things. "Blood diamonds" are diamonds that have been mined using slave labor, and are sold into the commercial diamond market in order to fund rebel groups waging civil wars against African governments. Defenseless African villagers are killed, tortured, raped, and forced by these rebel groups to mine diamonds, which are then sold to countries such as the United States.
