War, plague, famine and other socially catastrophic events create a disproportionate population of orphans. Lost children, some accidentally separated from families in the chaos and those that no longer have families with adult parents are usually left to fend for themselves.

Older children naturally posses the desire to care for young siblings and are often forced to take over the care of the younger in a crisis. If they can find a way, they lead their young charges to safety and hopefully to refuge. The relationship can also be seen as symbiotic. One brings hope and comfort and the other purpose.

While at times contentious, there is no greater bond than that between brothers.
