As of May 2012 we are in the process of creating a larger planting area to supply vegetables to a vegetarian restaurant in Puerto Princesa.
We started here in Palawan in late 2011 with the aim of developing a sustainable organic farm and quickly saw the potential and need for something broader. Our first project is getting the farm established and making it financially viable. We are in the process of developing social enterprises to support our community and associated projects.
We have developed a small system to supply high quality potable water. It currently serves our needs and the needs of a handful of homes of subsistence farmers near us. As of May 2012, we have negotiated to supply water to a bar nearby. This will raise funds for our projects and be cheaper and higher quality water for the bar, as well as saving the fossil fuels currently used to transport the water to the bar.
We are also exploring a range of ways in which we can draw on the expertise within our network to create social enterprises with benefits re employment, income generation, sustainability and local community building.
As Philippino musicians, we have developed great relations with the local music community. In May 2012 we formed a band with some of the locals and played our first gigs. We hope this will both generate some income whilst allowing us to share a positive message through our music into some of the bars and restaurants in Roxas.
The Department of Tourism has asked Abhijiit to provide support to them in developing strategies for tourism development in the area. We are hoping that our input along with good planning will facilitate the development of tourism projects that synergise with things like health and cultural promotion whilst developing income opportunities for those who are not so well off.
