As tourism (particularly eco-tourism) in Palawan grows, additional opportunities will continue to emerge, such as value-adding to organic produce, cultural tours and farmstay.
Local communities are strengthened through self reliance and sharing knowledge and resources and become less vulnerable to global issues.
Sharing, local production and consumption, and simple sustainable technologies (such as solar cookers) reduce environmental impacts.
Through organic farming, farmers are able to create a virtuous cycle in which they access their own resources (seed saving, composting, natural pest control, community knowledge, etc) rather than paying for chemical substitutes. They are able to produce superior quality produce and hence gain higher prices, move out of debt and gain greater control over their own lives. Farmers and consumers are healthier with the elimination of farm chemicals. Local food security is increased, as farmers are freed of dependence upon the corporations providing the chemicals and hybrid seeds. More sustainable farming practices improve soil quality rather than depleting it, resulting in higher yields over time.
Community development programs encouraging sustainable living offer hope.
Palawan Sustainable Community is developing as a model organic permaculture farm and integrated community near Roxas City, on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. The farm began in late 2011 and is already producing enough food to feed its residents, plus a surplus which is shared with the neighbourhood.
Palawan Sustainable Community aims to:
Develop a model sustainable organic farm and integrated community to demonstrate a viable alternative to current unsustainable practices
Demonstrate the economic, health, social and environmental benefits of sustainable organic farming in Palawan
Assist in the alleviation of poverty and conservation of the environment through supporting the uptake of sustainable organic farming practices in Palawan. This will be done via tours, education programs and partnerships with government, local leaders and local communities.
Encourage holistic simple living and healthy lifestyles through teaching yoga, promoting delicious organic vegetarian cooking, and encouraging greater self reliance, more sharing and less consumerism
Work closely with the people of the local area to develop responses to issues relating to poverty, health, education and wellbeing.
