ARTISTIC DIRECTOR GF&CO (GIA FORAKIS & COMPANY) FOUNDED 2011 – PRESENT
GF&CO is a not-for-profit studio-lab and theater company found in 2011 dedicated to creating events and projects for the stage through the experimentation and application of One-Thought-One-Action (OTOA)™.
GF&CO’s MISSION is built upon the premise that the arts are where we encounter our humanity, nurture our civility, and fortify our connection to one another. We aim to do this through our commitment to putting One-Thought-One-Action into action by developing performance projects and creating art events with like-minded artists and producing partners that remind us to foster something larger than our quotidian sense of self. STAGE DIRECTOR & THEATER ARTIST
Gia Forakis is a theater artist based in Brooklyn, NY, well known as a stage director, playwright, performer, producer, theater-maker, the Founder & Master Teacher of OTOA, and Artistic Director of GF&CO. She is a current member of SDC (the Stage Directors and Choreographer’s union).
As a freelance stage director she has worked in theaters across the country, and in Hungary, Greece and Serbia. She has directed the premiere of new and contemporary plays, re-envisioned classics, adapted literary works, original devised productions, along with original scripts that she has written or co-translated, and teamed up to collaborate on the premiere (and remounting) of an original, multi-media opera (see sample credits below).
Often referred to as an Auteur Stage Director, Gia’s professional career as a theater artist spans over four decades. Her aesthetic incorporates a hybrid of experimental, movement-based theater with traditional theatrical conventions. Her work is known for its attention to a detailed physical and visual approach to storytelling.
Through her rehearsal process the text becomes a map for discovering and identifying a path of incremental thoughts that lead to what might be considered a choreographed score of moment-to-moment physical actions. She achieves this by introducing the principles of the OTOA performance technique to each cast of performers she works with. In this way, she aims to create a unified language and frame of reference for structuring the collaboration.
Her OTOA performance technique informs and supports her aesthetic by focusing on what she refers to as the Physical Expression of the Performer’s (or Character’s) Thinking Process, and she often employs stylized, or ritualized, movement to reveal the sub-textual landscape.
She finds the most satisfaction in creating adaptations, experimental or devised, ensemble-built original works, and/or in re-envisioning classic texts in pursuit of their contemporary resonance.
Gia's ongoing commitment to the theater comes from a driving desire to reflect a world of mythical, and metaphorical potential that captures the poetic nature of the human condition: that awakens our collective potential by offering an opportunity to connect with something larger than our quotidian sense of self; to reveal those rare and mystical moments where the miraculous is revealed and the realm of daily existence is expanded into epic proportions.
OTOA FOUNDER & MASTER TEACHER One-Thought-One-Action (OTOA) ™ Founded 2004. Teaching since 2006
OTOA is the study and practice of identifying smaller increments of thought as smaller moments of physical action, and was developed and founded by Gia Forakis. Forakis teaches the principles of OTOA as two different applications:
*First, as a practical performance and directing technique referred to as Performance Technique & Training (PTT)™, benefitting performers, directors, collaborators, theater makers, singers, film makers, public speakers
*Second, as a practical tool for personal and professional growth that we refer to as OTOA Creative Life Practice (CLP)™, which is open to everyone in any discipline and in every field.
Gia has led workshops, and seminars in OTOA across the country and around the globe. For a selection of these credits please see credits below. She is currently working on a two part book on the Origins & Principles of OTOA

FOUNDER: Artistic Director
Pull & Be Damned Productions (1985-1993) | Epic Proportions Productions (1993-1997)
Over a period of 12 years, between 1985-1997, Gia founded and ran two not-for-profit, producing organizations, which were established to support her own experimental, multimedia works for the stage. In total, between these two organizations, she created, wrote and produced over 17 original works, with cast sizes that ranged from solo work to ensembles of 6-10 performers. These works can be described as: experimental theater, dance-theater, performance-theater, devised and/or adaptations, and/or performance art: non-linear narratives, built around a theme, journey or adapted text, that often incorporated choreographed movement, music, projections, video, and installations, and where Forakis was a featured performer. Each work was built upon original scripted text that she had written, and, depending on the project, frequently included devised work created by the ensemble of collaborators, and sometimes incorporated found text. Gia was often the director and/or co-director of these projects

“Without a doubt, an original and creative approach to the morbidly ironic classic Greek tale. ... Forakis demonstrates a remarkable ingenuity. O-Rex ...successfully reinterprets a Greek epic through a Neo-noir lens while managing to capture the essence of Sophocles’ original classic – the morbid irony of truth.” -Justin Sherbert
