AGN

Some galaxies have a central region that is very luminous compared to the rest of the galaxy. This central region is called an “Active Galactic Nuclei”, or AGN for short. Emissions from AGNs can be observed in a wide range of wavebands.

AGNs are considered to play a large role in the evolution of its host galaxy. For example, the energy release that occurs when material accretes onto an AGN, known as feedback, can cause the quenching of star formation, making AGNs a regulator of star formation activity of its host.
