Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion & Tenure Committee (ARPT)

-- A Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate --

This is an elected committee. Elections are conducted in the Spring.

The ARPT Committee is empowered under the Bylaws to “review candidates for initial appointment, reappointment, continuing appointment [tenure] and promotion under strict rules of confidentiality.” It handles initial appointments of tenure track faculty and lecturers, as well as reappointment, promotion, and tenure of tenure track faculty.

ARPT’s main role is to review reappointment, promotion, and tenure files prepared by candidates and their departments to ensure adherence to stated criteria, consistency across departments and schools, and safeguarding of candidates’ rights, and to make an independent assessment of and recommendation on each file based on its review. ARPT’s decisions constitute recommendations to the Office of Academic Affairs (which also considers recommendations by the relevant Deans) and, through Academic Affairs, to the president.

ARPT usually considers first reappointments in Fall semester and second reappointments, one-year-to-tenure-review reappointments, and tenure/promotion reviews in Spring semester. Reviews for promotion to Professor can come at any time.

For a full description of ARPT’s authority and procedures, see Faculty Bylaws (2016); for the Criteria and other information on reappointment, promotion and tenure, see ARPT Manual of Procedures (2020).
