This machine was a Craig's List find and came complete with purpose built table, Singer motor and a pat. 1893 W&W clutch. Machine, motor and clutch were functional as found.
Singer Model 21W180
As Found Motor and Clutch
Serial Number W217906
The machine is currently mounted on a Wheeler & Wilson #9 domestic treadle circa 1895. The top was made from the orignal coffin top cabinet with flaking veneer and drawers removed. The opening was enlarged slightly.
The machine is a compound feed composed of the normal drop feed as well as a needle feed. The needle feed shifts fore-aft maintaining a perpendicular alignment to the machine deck ( no pendulum action).
A wartime 1918 advertisement found at the Smithsonian Institute Site advises...
"... It is used for stitching light and medium fabrics in the manufacture of articles of military and naval equipment such as haversacks, pack carriers, leggings, cartridge belts, canteen covers and pouches and carriers of all kinds...
... After the needle has entered the fabric, the needle and feed, in unison, move the work forward so that the feeding is perfectly accomplished..."
