The Ohio Traffic Rules are the court rules that set the steps in a traffic case, from the ticket to the plea to trial. This page explains what the rules are, where to find the official current version, and which rules ordinary people with a ticket most often need. It does not copy the rules, because copied rule text goes out of date. Always read the official version.
The Supreme Court of Ohio publishes the current Traffic Rules for free:
The rules change. For example, Rule 1, Rule 2, Rule 3 and Rule 11 have all been amended since 2022. Each rule in the PDF ends with its "Effective Date" and "Amended" dates, so you can see when it last changed.
They apply in every Ohio court that hears traffic cases. Rule 1(A) says the rules "prescribe the procedure to be followed in all courts of this state in traffic cases." (Traf.R. 1(A))
"Court" includes mayor's courts. Rule 2(F) defines "court" as a municipal court, county court, juvenile division of the common pleas court, or mayor's court. (Traf.R. 2(F))
They do not cover felony traffic cases. Rule 2(A) excludes any proceeding that includes an alleged violation of Title 29 of the Revised Code (the criminal code). (Traf.R. 2(A))
The judge can still require you to come in person. Even where a video or audio option exists, Rule 1(C) lets a judge or magistrate order a party, lawyer, or witness to appear physically. (Traf.R. 1(C))
When the Traffic Rules are silent, the Criminal Rules fill the gap. See the Rule 20 page. (Traf.R. 20)

Each court may also have its own local rules. Rule 19 says local rules must be "supplementary to and consistent with" the Traffic Rules, and each court must publish its local rules and keep copies for inspection. Ask the clerk of your court for its local rules, or check the court's website. (Traf.R. 19)
Rule text changes over time, and an old copy can mislead you. This site gives a short plain-language summary and links to the official text. If the summary and the official rule ever differ, the official rule controls.
