OMELC Constitution

Purpose of the Organization

To enhance and extend leadership in mathematics education in and for Ohio schools.

Membership

Membership is open to all individuals interested in and committed to the purpose of the organization

Affiliations

The Ohio Mathematics Education Leadership Council (OMELC) is an affiliate of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). OMELC may affiliate with other organizations, subject to the approval of a majority of those OMELC members voting.

Officers (See current board members)

    1. The Board of Directors is constituted of nine individuals, six elected members, one treasurer, and two ex officio members.
    2. Terms of the elected directors and the treasurer are for three years duration. Two are elected each year, and the treasurer every three years, by simple majority vote of the membership at the meeting in conjunction with the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual meeting. One of the directors elected each year must be from schools and the other from a college/university. A board member, other than the treasurer, is not eligible for re-election to the board until a period of at least three years has passed after services as a board member.
    3. The two ex officio members of the Board will be the president of OCTM or the president's designated representative & a mathematics educator from the Ohio Department of Education.

Each year, when the elections are decided, the Board of Directors will select one elected member of the Board to serve as the president of the Ohio Mathematics Education Leadership Council for the coming year.

Duties and responsibilities of the Board

    1. Plan and conduct meetings including selection of themes, topics, speakers and activities and the establishment of time necessary for the meetings.
    2. Communicate with membership.
    3. Serve as the nominating committee.
    4. Take the initiative for improving mathematics education and mathematics education leadership in Ohio.

Meetings

The organization will meet each year in conjunction with the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual meeting. Other meetings may be held.

Quorum

A quorum shall be defined as those present at a meeting.

Amendments

This document may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote at the meeting held annually in conjunction with the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. All amendment proposals shall be submitted to the membership by mail one month before the meeting at which the amendment is to be presented.

Lack of Formality:

The organization assumes as a bylaw that organizational clap-trap shall be kept at a minimum.
