Who do we worship?

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

This semester is quite hectic for me, therefore , I don't have much time to write tazkirah in here. However, knowing that some of you do read my writings here, I feel obligated to write so that we all can benefit. I remember when I just started working in IIUM as a tutor, the first time I walked in the class room for a tutorial, my heart was delighted to see familiar faces, faces of the same aqidah...young faces which I believe is the beacon for the ummah, and since then I am always happy to go to my classes.

I will start to write a series of tazkirah based on the advice of Luqmanul Hakim to his son, which is engraved in the Quran. I always see my students as my younger brothers and sisters, and I want the best for them both in dunya and akheerah.

Here goes, the first advice of Luqman to his son,

Behold, Luqman said to his son admonishing him: "O my son! Join not in worship (others) with Allah: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing." (Luqman :13)

The first advice is not to worship anything except for Allah and it is the worst sin to have anything associated with Allah. There is a reason why Luqman the Wise put this as the first advice. It is the most important thing in life, yes more important than your degree, more important than your family, more important compared to everything else. If you are not clear about this, who your Robb is, you will not have a purposeful life.

Most of us will say, oh please madam, I am already clear about this, I know Allah is my God, and I do pray everyday, so please give me the second advice. I will ask you back, are you really sure? Then how come you can cheat in the quizzes and exams? How come you don't give your outmost best when you are studying? How come you are rude to the elders? How come you can postpone your solah because your favourite artist is singing in the tv? Why don't you cover your aurah properly?

If we are clear that Allah is our Creator, and we know His attributes, we will not do the list above. Sometimes our mouth says that we worship Allah, but in reality, we do not. We worship wealth, working day and night, ignoring the halal and harams.. We worship status, we do anything so that we are well known and famous.. We worship artist, we follow everything the artist do, the hair style, the fashion, the lifestyle, everything...so where is Allah now?

Everything boils down to our faith, our aqeedah. Do we really worship and testify whole heartedly that Allah is the One and ONLY one to worship? We need to look deep down in our hearts, and ask who is really our Ilaah and thus prove that only Him and Him alone we worship.
