Open Forum on Teaching Science in Muslim World, Hilton Hotel KL (16/12/2014)

The forum was organised by MIGHT and muslimscience.com task force under the ministry. It was interesting to hear what are the other muslim countries concerns regarding the teaching of science.

The key speaker was Prof. Bruce Alberts (USA) who is now the USA science ambassador to Indonesia to improve science teaching there.

An interesting note by him, the reason why we want to promote science education is so that society can gain from the way science people think, with clear methodology and logical thinking and hence develop a better community.

Academic Profession on IIUM Convocation 2014 ( 11/10 2014)

Kulliyyah of Engineering, under the ECE Department has conferred Tan Sri Shamsuddin Abdul Kadir (founder of Sapura Holdings) for the honorary doctorate.

I am one of the representative of the kuliyyah to be able to witness the occasion. This is my first time attending a convocation in IIUM and also in Malaysia. I really like the selawat sung during the convocation, very melodious and soothing. It is a different feeling when you actually stand on the stage not to receive the degree but to be part of the university conferring the degree. To be able to see the hall full with proud parents hoping that their sons and daughters will be a successful person one day. It hits on me how important the role of teacher and lecturers to ensure the graduates produced are good quality person with high moral standing.

Here is a photo with my friends from KICT, Dr Mira and Dr Ema.

Here is a photo with ECE representatives, Prof Othman (HOD) and Prof Shihab.

Alhamdulillah, at last the PL/EL setup has arrived! Now we can do optical characterisation on top of electrical characetrisation on semiconductor devices.

In the photo is Mr. Felix (the senior person) an engineer for HORIBA giving us the training on how to use the equipment.

The setup is able to measure from visible wavelength up to 1700nm. We currently do not have a laser, but inshaAllah looking forward to buy one.

I would like to thank Kulliyyah of Engineering and specifically to Electrical and Computer engineering department for their kind consideration. Hoping to do more research for the benefit of the world, inshaAllah.

Anyone in the university or anybody outside who would like to collaborate are welcome to contact me. We will find the best way for the utilisation of the equipment.

'I am a scientist, Get me out of Here' Competition (21 Oct- 1 Nov 2013)

Alhamdulillah, I participated in an online reality programme called ' I am a scientist, Get me out of here', the first ever organised by Akademi Sains Malaysia. The programme is about educating young Malaysians on science and promoting this field to them. There were 4 schools and all together 5 scientist participated, Prof Wong, Dr. Pike See, Dr. Michael, Dr. Afznizanfaizal and myself.

Dr. Faizal and me were representatives from PERINTIS (Persatuan Saintis Muslim Malaysia). In the end, one scientist was voted by the school children as a winner to win RM5000 to make a project with students. And guess what, shockingly, all praise to Allah, I was announced as the winner!

Jazakumullahu khairan to Perintis for the trust given and also to all the awesome students from the participated schools. It was really an excellent experience, chatting with form three students and mind you, the questions by the students, some were really tough :)

Lastly, thank you to Akademi Sains Malaysia for allowing me to participate. It is a pleasure to be part of the programme, and hope the programme will catch on for the next seasons.

If you are interested, you may go to their website to see all the questions asked and answered by the scientist here http://utarid.ias.sciencebuzz.my/scientists/

On the left excerpt from facebook of Dr. Harlina Siraj on her congratulations....thank you Dr. Har, it is an honour to have an acknowledgment from you :)

4th IEEE International Conference on Photonics (28-30 Oct 2013, Equitorial Hotel Melaka)

My student, Dhiauddin and me participated in the Photonics conference for the first time since I am back in Malaysia. It was a good conference, mainly the papers presented were about fibre optic. We presented a paper on leakage current on quantum dot structures.

I met Prof. Zaini from UNITEN there. I was his tutor back in 2002 when he was teaching electronics. Please to meet him again, a humble and friendly person. Also met Dr. Pin Jern, who did his PhD in Sheffield university in our research group. But forgot to take photo with them

ISLAHI (Intellectual, Spiritual, Leadership And Human Knowledge Islamisation) 21-23 March 2013, ISTAC IIUM

I went to the ISLAHI program in ISTAC with the intention of learning more about islamization. However, am a bit dissapointed as I have not fully grasp the practicality of it in engineering terms. They mentioned about ethics and akhlaq, I was hoping for more.

Talk by Prof. Khalid was very good, I wish he can give the same presentation to all IIUM lecturers in Kulliyyah of Engineering. I also like the talk by Prof. Rosnani from education. She briefs what are the obstacles in islamization which one is the background of lecturers not well versed in the quran/hadith. I wish UIA can do more on the matter.

I specifically like the tazkiyatunnafs session by Dr. Alaa Hosni Ahmed El Mozain on ar raqaiq...penyucian jiwa.

Meeting with Puan Julia, Dr. Nahrul and the students 7th March 2013

The photo on the left was taken with the medals and certificate.

This photo taken with the poster we brought. Both english and korean version poster.

This is the photo taken during the judging. The lady on the right is the interpreter. The judges are not fluent in english. The only question the judge asked was, is it safe?

This photo was taken with all the IIUM staff who went there in front of IIUM booth.

From left is myself, Dr. Hazleen, Dr. Razak, Dato' Alias (Director RMC), Madam Hasnah (RMC), Dr. Maizirwan (RMC) and Prof. Shamsul (RMC).

The Invention fair arranged for the participants for a visit to the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. The palace is next to their parliamentary building. We had a tour guide explaining interesting features of the palace and its history. One thing I learn from visiting the palace is that Islam is a beautiful religion. Why and how? Its a long story...

Just want to share the beautiful cabbages (kobis) available there in Korea. It looks like a flower but actually a cabbage. Not sure if it is edible or not but they are pretty. Even vegetables nowadays becomes ornaments. This photo was taken alongside a pedestrian walk.

World Innovation Forum 2012 (5-6 November 2012)

The forum was held in KL Convention Centre jointly organised by MOSTI and Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia. The theme of the forum was inclusive innovation for transformation. It was a very good forum where experts from the engineering, economic and education field was brought forward. Basically the goverment wants to inculcate the culture of innovating amongst the citizens so that Malaysia can become a developed country with high income. I learned a lot especially how to start innovate. Basically its starts first with our utopian dreams, finding the challenges and unmet need opportunities and moves towards them.

This photo was taken outside the plenary hall with Dr. Salmiah Ahmad from Mechatronics Department.
